04. The story
How it startedIt started in our favorite dog café in Amsterdam.
We were sitting in our favorite dog café in Amsterdam when my partner pulled a book off the shelf. Dog, by Tein Lucasson. We turned the pages and stopped on a portrait that felt like every serious painting we'd ever loved. Except it was a dog. We looked at each other and said the same thing. We need this at home.
Nothing like it existed for our own dog. Zola is a small, serious princess of a creature, and no studio would paint her in that register. So we built one. My background is in AI images. Ours is a love of dogs, and one in particular.
We named the studio Maison Zola because Zola already runs the house. The rest of us just live in it.

The watercolor pet portrait sits in the lightest register of the painted-portrait tradition. Built from translucent layers rather than opaque body colour, the painting reads as if the subject has been lifted forward from a soft, cream-coloured ground. Edges are kept open, the brush is allowed to bloom and run in places, and the light passes through the pigment rather than sitting on top of it.
In our atelier the watercolor mode is the most demanding of the studio modes. Each pass leaves a permanent mark on the paper; the medium does not forgive revision the way oil does. The discipline of the register is the discipline of committing to the next layer.
The watercolor register is in calibration and opening shortly. While we finish the calibration, our classical oil mode is the closest available studio register: the same studio pipeline, the same archival finish, the same Belgian-designed atelier voice.

The watercolor register is in calibration. The closest available studio mode is our classical oil, finished on archival paper. We will finish your portrait in oil today, and add you to the watercolor list if you want to be told when that mode opens.
Will it actually look like my pet?
Yes. The composition traces your photograph. Eyes, markings, ears, the parts that made them them. If something is off, we redo it.
What does it cost?
The classical oil mode you can begin today follows our standard pricing — see the catalogue for the current SKU range. The watercolor register is in calibration; pricing for that mode will be confirmed when the SKU opens.
Which photo should I upload?
One photograph, in good light, the head and shoulders clearly visible. The studio scores every upload and tells you if a different shot would produce a better portrait.
How long until the portrait arrives?
Standard delivery is 4 to 7 business days in the US, 5 to 10 in the UK, 7 to 14 internationally. Express is available at checkout.
What if I don't love the result?
Tell us within thirty days. We will remake the portrait or refund. Your choice. We never put you in a replacement loop.
